Günter Haumer will sing in Christmas in Vienna 2017 with Juan Diego Flórez, Anne Sofie von Otter and Olga Peretyatko.

Christmas in Vienna is looking for perfection at the highest level, is looking for the best classical voices and finds the stars of this world. Classic conquers the hearts of the fans … The concert takes its audience into a world of its own for a few moments, consults on Christmas, and creates a sense of peace among people – from humanism or religious conviction. Plácido Domingo invited the superstars to Vienna every year. Dionne Warwick, Michael Bolton, Sarah Brightman and Patricia Kaas, as well as legends like Charles Aznavour and Tony Bennett, are the names of the pearls of a chain: Diana Ross, who began with José Carreras. A special highlight in 1999 was the concert with the three tenors.

Fame and brand, however, survived and in 2003 a new and independent Christmas in Vienna was established. The message of peace has remained, and Karl Scheibmaier, as artistic director, carefully led the Gala concert into a new format in which classical literature dominated the program. The venture has paid off as soon as the superstars of classical music sang in the Viennese concert hall again: artists such as Thomas Hampson, Grace Bumbry, Juan Diego Flórez and Elīna Garanča led the Christmas Gala concert into a new popularity that still dominated the Great Hall Seams. Thousands of spectators enjoy the festive event live at the Vienna Konzerthaus, hundreds of thousands watch it in front of the screens, and millions listen to the songs of Christmas in Vienna at home on CD or You Tube.

The importance of Christmas in Vienna with singers and the audience reflects José Cura’s words well: “Once in your life you have to sing Christmas in Vienna.”

Manuel Haumer sings at the gala “Hollywood in Vienna”, homage to Danny Elfman.

»Hollywood in Vienna« is a symphonic gala concert celebrating classic and current masterpieces of film music in the prestigious Wiener Konzerthaus (Vienna Concert Hall) in Vienna, capital of Austria. Within the course of each gala, the City of Vienna awards one of today’s leading film music composers with the »Max Steiner Film Music Achievement Award«. The Viennese Max Steiner belongs to the most influential pioneers in the history of Hollywood movies and scored all-time classics like KING KONGGONE WITH THE WIND and CASABLANCA.

This year we honour a composer of countless fantastically bizarre screen fables. Danny Elfman, who has won many awards and has been nominated for four Oscars, will be awarded the Max Steiner Film Music Achievement Award. As a congenial partner of the director Tim Burton, he added his unmistakably powerful sound fantasies to the morbid and playful worlds of EDWARD SCISSORHANDSNIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, and CORPSE BRIDE. In BATMAN and BATMAN RETURNS, as well as in the movie celebrating America’s yellow cult family THE SIMPSONS, he created musical monuments for two legendary – and very different – sets of heroes.

The concert will be recorded for TV and radio and broadcasted on an international level.

Danny Elfman Violin Concerto dedicated to Sandy Cameron  – WORLD PREMIERE
Danny Elfman Movie Music

Sandy Cameron – declared “brilliant,” by the Washington Post, violinist Sandy Cameron is one of the most strikingly unique artists of her generation. Currently, she is a featured soloist in Danny Elfman’s Music from the Films of Tim Burton concerts, The Nightmare Before Christmas Live at The Hollywood Bowl, and The Little Mermaid Live at The Hollywood Bowl. She has been touring with jazz trumpeter and composer Chris Botti, performing jazz standards and classical repertoire. Sandy has also performed as a soloist in Tan Dun’s Martial Arts Trilogy, and most recently gave the world premiere of Austin Wintory’s Assassin Dances, which features music from his score for the video game Assasin’s Creed Syndicate.

Czech National Symphony Orchestra – Celebrating its 24th birthday in 2017, the CNSO has gained a position among both Czech and Europe’s top symphonic ensembles. Renowned for its versatility, the orchestra presents annually a broad program ranging from classical music concerts through contemporary genre, film scores, jazz, or musicals. In its new era, The Czech National Symphony Orchestra is also organizing summer Prague Proms Festival which annually attracts the audience for presenting greatest international performers. Such composers, conductors, and performers as Ennio Morricone, Lalo Schifrin, James Morrison, Branford & Wynton Marsalis, Pino Donnagio, Giuliano Taviani, José Carreras, Danny Elfman, Vince Mendoza, Giuseppe Tornatore, Carl Davis repeatedly come back to Prague to either record with the orchestra or perform in the beautiful Smetana Hall of Prague´s Municipal House, the home concert stage of the orchestra. The Czech National Symphony Orchestra was established in 1993 by trumpet player Jan Hasenöhrl. A spiritual father at the birth of the CNSO was the legendary conductor Zdeněk Košler. In the year 1996, the American Paul Freeman took over as Chief Conductor, and remained in this position for fantastic ten years. At the beginning of the year 2007, Maestro Libor Pesek was named the Chief Conductor and he still remains at this position today.

Danny Elfman – author. Over the last 30 years, four-time Oscar nominee Danny Elfman has established himself as one of the most versatile and accomplished film composers in the industry. Older audience members will remember Danny Elfman as the unmistakable singer of US group Oingo Boingo and his diverse film music work including Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Planet of the Apes, Sommersby and even TV series Desperate Housewives. However, the artist has no trouble appealing to fans across the generations with his scores for Tim Burton films such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure and many more.

John Mauceri – conductor
CNSO Mixed Choir
